June 28, 2011....Bob Brinker's Oil Stock Recommendation (And Gold and Silver)

June 28, 2011....In May, 2009, Bob Brinker added Suncor (SU) to his Marketimer list of individual issues recommendations.

There are only three individual company stocks on this off-the-books  list and the other two stocks have been on the list for over a decade.  All of the other items on the list are ETFs including GLD,  the gold ETF.  Brinker added GLD at  the same time that he added Suncor, but he gave no buy price for it at the time and no follow-up advice since then.  (At least two times, on Moneytalk, Brinker has said that  SLV, the silver ETF, can be used as a hedge against a falling dollar as well as GLD.)

Marketimer, May, 2009, Bob Brinker wrote: "This month we have added Suncor (SU) to our coverage. Suncor is a leading Canadian oil sands producer with vast reserves in the Athabasca Tar Sands of Alberta. We rate Suncor attractive for purchase in the mid-20's price range. We view Suncor as an excellent way to protect portfolios against rising oil prices in the future.......Individual company holdings should not exceed four percent of equities in order to manage specific company risk."
Business Summary
Suncor Energy Inc., together with its subsidiaries, operates as an integrated energy company. The company involves in the development of petroleum resource basins in Canada's Athabasca oil sands; acquisition, exploration, development, production, and marketing of crude oil and natural gas in Canada and internationally; transportation and refining of crude oil; and marketing of petroleum and petrochemical products primarily in Canada.
The first day that Marketimer subscribers could buy SU on Brinker's recommendation, it closed at $27.30.  A few months later, Brinker raised the buy-price to the low-$30 range.   However, since March 2011,  Suncor has been listed as a  hold.

I think those individual listing are meaningless. Totally bogus listings for the casual reader, the potential subscriber.

It gives the impression that Brinker has discussed and had recommendation on important areas such as oil, gold, silver etc when in fact he has done absolutely nothing except toss out a stock name that he can spin later if the opportunity comes up.

IMO, these are not real recommentaions and were never intended as such.

That's why there's NO buy prices, no follow up...nothing for 10 years or so.

All bullcrap.

This is just the type of action that Obama needs to focus on (along with big cuts to the bloated Federal government) if he wants to get re-elected.

"Raise taxes on wealthiest, Obama challenges GOP. In a blunt challenge to Republicans in Congress, President Barack Obama insisted Wednesday that limiting selected tax breaks for oil companies and the super-wealthy must be part of any deficit reduction plan." MSN News

Bob,

I strongly agree with everything you said. It is all designed to be Bob Brinker's bait to chum the Moneytalk waters with, looking for suckers who will bite.

As you said, the list is virtually meaningless. I mean, how much skill does it take to choose SPY, VTI (total marker), IWV (Russell 3000), DIA (Dow) DVY, EFA (international) and QQQQ, put them on a list with no buy prices and no sell signals (EVER!).

And part of the bullcrap you mentioned is that he never has to be accountable for them when they drop because they are not part of his "official" performance record.

He can make all kinds of recommendations, but as long as he doesn't add them to his model portfolios, he swims away untouched.

Even Mark Hulbert only ranks the Marketimer model portfolios.

James....It's good to hear from you IF you are the James Kenney who is one of my Facebook "friends."

So you think Obama is on the right track to get re-elected huh?

Personally, I have a problem with all this class warfare garbage. But if we are going to tax "the rich," let's go all the way.

I'd like to have half of George Soros, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and the Kennedy money. I want a home on Martha's Vineyard and a chalet in Switzerland. I'd like to live next door to Diane Feinstein in a gated community on SF Bay.

I'm sure I can think of more things "the rich" should be made to share with me.

Amazon drops 10,000 California partners:

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Amazon.com Inc. plans to cut ties with 10,000 California marketing affiliates to avoid collecting a new state tax, according to a report released late Wednesday. The Los Angeles Times said that the tax would force Amazon to collect California state sales tax on purchases made through the affiliates, as part of Gov. Jerry Brown's plan to close a budget gap in 2011-2012. The affiliates use Amazon to sell their products and are paid either a percentage of the sales or get a commission from Amazon after each sale. Other states have required online retailers to collect sales taxes if they have online affiliates in the state, and Amazon has responded by dropping affiliates in those states. "This legislation is counterproductive and will not cause our retail business to collect sales tax for the state," said Paul Misener, Amazon's global-policy vice president, in a statement according to the Wall Street Journal.

Hi unidentifiable person who obviously reads this blog faithfully.

The answer to your question is very simple. Bob Brinker has an audience that he claims numbers in the millions.

I have documentation that proves some of his advice has financially damaged many people.

I provide a public record of what Brinker says to the audience.

So when he changes his tune, dissembles, distorts, exaggerates, misstates, camouflages, cloaks, conceals, covers up, dissimulates, double-talks, falsifies, feigns, hides, lets on, masks, put on an act, put up a front, puts up a smoke screen or does the shuck and jive, the truth is posted here for anyone who cares to find it.

Now you mentioned logic. Can you tell me what is logical about someone reading a blog that is written by someone he/she hates as much as you hate me?

Answer that question or I will delete your posts from now on.

I occasionally read this blog, (certainly not "faithfully" as you put it! - isn't that giving yourself a little too much credit :)
Anyway, I certainly don't "hate you" as you suggest.. How is that possible? I don't even know you..
You are kinda defensive, doncha think?

THEN WHY WHY WHY DO YOU DEVOTE HOURS UPON HOURS

Ms. Bee does this case because she is trying to protect the naive ftrom one of Da Brinks Shark attacks. da Brink doesn't do a full out assault on his victims wallet but he skims a little from each and hopes to go undetectd.

I find it analogous to the difference between a full fledged rapist and a peeping-Tom. Both are degenerates and care only for themselves and are willing to victimize people in an inferior position.

Ms.Bee chronicles Brinker's record for much the same reason that so many States now publish the addresses of know sexual predators. Ms. Bee is clearly identifying the Radio address of a financial flim-flam man and trying to warn people that a predators is cruising their airwaves.

Speaking for myself Brinker's attitude inspires me to do it. A person on MSNBC expressed his opinion on how the current resident of the Whitehouse conducted himself in a recent appearance. IMHO Brinker acts the same way. He sort of reminds me of the kid in grade school with the sign on his back that says kick me.

When I first heard Brinker on the radio something just didn't seem right. He was claiming that he could predict major down turns in the stock market and his followers would avoid losing money by selling out. Since many notable experts said this was not only impossible to do consistently but a bad a strategy that could lead to unnecessary loses, I was skeptical. Brinker was claiming he could do something that John Bogle said couldn't be done. Since Brinker recently missed calling the biggest bear market in the last half century, it looks like Bogle is right.

Jeffchristie,

Your post reminds me of what these two great financial gurus said about timing the market:

"The idea that a bell rings to signal when investors should get into or out of the stock market is simply not credible. After nearly 50 years in this business, I do not know of anybody who has done it successfully and consistently. I don't even know anybody who knows anybody who has done it successfully and consistently".___________John C. Bogle

"Well, let me tell you, I have been following markets for about 50 years, and I've never met anybody who could time the market correctly. And I say, stay the course............. And what I'm absolutely convinced of is: You'll NEVER, NEVER, NEVER be able to time the market."____Professor Burton Malkiel

Yes, indeed! And I like your word "chronicles," to describe what this blog is all about.

If you want to know what Bob Brinker was saying about the markets, economy or even politics, last week, last year or even longer, I have most of it chronicled.

When making comparisons, it doesn't take long to spot patterns in his schtick that are shark-bait.

A great week for the market. This might be enough for Brinker to start talking about the stock market again. However with a holiday weekend upon us he probably will take Sunday off. I would expect him to start bashing the bears again if the rally continues.

To the poster who wonders about the purpose of this blog I would say it is to warn investors that "America's most trusted financial advisor" cannot always be trusted.

The stock market had a lousy June, but recovered some this week, which means that BB will NOT comment on it AND not only that, he will NOT be hosting this weekend because it is a holiday.

WSJ today, front page: Geithner Toys with Leaving.

Possible replacements, and I cannot take credit for thinking these up, I heard on the radio:

Nicholas Cage. tax evader.
Wesley Snipes ditto. convicted, I believe.
Charley Rangel:
Leona Helmsley (she is deceased, but she believed only little people paid taxes.)
Willie Nelson.
Richard Hatch -- he was the winner on some early reality show and he didn't pay taxes on his winnings.
