April 8, 2012, Bob Brinker's Moneytalk: Lynn Jimenez Fill-in Host

April 8, 2012....As most of us expected, Bob Brinker took Easter Sunday off from Moneytalk. Lynn Jimenez filled in for Bob today.

I didn't listen to much of the program, just parts of the third hour,  but Jeffchristie did and gave me a rundown.

Jeff said that Lynn's  topics were oil/energy and why investing in the stock market is unfair to everyone except the "big players."  In general,  Lynn's attitude about investing in the stock market is very negative, and she referred to it as a "Ponzi Scheme"  today.  I have never heard Bob Brinker say anything remotely similar.

Lynn was rude to a couple of callers and cut them off when they dared mention an opinion that didn't fit with her own political agenda.

One of those hapless callers was Candice in the third hour. Candice pointed out that in spite of all the talk about oil reserves, Keystone Pipeline and refineries, Lynn had carefully avoided saying anything negative about the Obama Administration's role.

Lynn actually screamed over Candice at the top of her lungs and said SHE was going to make the rules about what could be discussed and that did not include Obama. Later,  Lynn  tried to make light of her rudeness by making the comment:  "I never promised that I wouldn't yell at you."

Very nice, Lynn, very professional -- NOT!

Lynn's guest speaker was John Kilduff -- more discussion about oil/energy.   After all the whining Lynn did  about "Wall Street" being unfair to the "little guys," how ironic that the guest's resume looks like this:
John Kilduff, Founding Partner, has over 15 years experience in energy trading. His experience includes trading energy futures and options, over-the-counter energy derivatives, portfolio construction and risk management......Mr. Kilduff also participated in the launch of Round Earth Capital, a natural resources hedge fund.
Lynn made the comment that she: "loves algae." Maybe that "love" has something to do with this Forbes article: "The Obama Administration has already sunk $25 million into a Florida company—Algenol Biofuels—that is building an algae biorefinery using a patented technology that promises to streamline the process of extracting oils from algae so they be converted to ethanol directly from algae.

 ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

A couple of weeks ago, Bob Brinker gave the audience one of the Moneytalk Final Exam questions. Here it is:  "What seven states have no state income tax?"

Now, through his Secret-Moneytalk Decoder Ring, Jeffchristie has received another Moneytalk Final Exam question for this week. It's multiple choice:

The late Bill Flanagan was the substitute host for Moneytalk prior to Lynn Jimenez. Bill once expressed his feelings about GM cars when he said they were:

A) Pretty cars
B) Kiddy cars
C) Little bitty cars
D) Flanagan used one of the seven words that George Carlin said you couldn't say on television.

The answer can be found in the audio link below.  Skip to the 5 minute mark.

Moneytalk: Bill Flanagan Says a no-no

Honey EC: I really enjoyed listening to Jeff's great find of Bill Flanagan filling in for Bob Brinker. We think this was shortly before Bill died -- probably 2009. He used a word that would give Bob Brinker nightmares. Bob wouldn't even give a book title a couple of weeks ago because it had the word "bitch" in it.  Guess his mom used a lot of soap on him. LOL!

Lynn's Moneytalk show from yesterday is now available and  Free on Demand at KSFO 560 in the 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm time slots.

I predict that Bob Brinker will complain to Youtube about that Bill Flanagan clip from Moneytalk and it will be deleted in the next 24 hours.

I can't stand this lady either...I'm surprised after all these years, Bob hasn't found someone better.

I predict Jimenez next book will be:

Have another glass of Tequila: the barren, feminist, activist, woman's per-menopausal guide to self medication through alcohol.

After correctly answering the Flanagan question, I feel it's time for another Investor Aptitude Quiz. I hope you all brought your No. 2 pencils.

Match the name with occupation. Good luck.

Well, Jeffchristie was 100% right when he predicted this last week:

I suspect that Bob will not be hosting tomorrow on Easter Sunday. Lynn might say that Bob is taking some well deserved time off. He is helping that fluffy Bunny deliver candy and Easter eggs to those young sprouts out there.

I understand that all the young sprouts had plenty of candy and Easter eggs thanks to the Fluffy Bunny and Bob.

Friday's job report is taking its toll on the market, with the Dow dropping below the 13,000 mark.

It has now reached an oversold condition and would seem ripe for a snap-back rally. April is historically a good month, and is the last month in the 6-month seasonally favorable period.

The Dow has also dipped slightly below a rising 50-day moving average.

My ETF of choice is SSO (double SPY), and so far I'm up a whopping $18! More to come...hopefully!

I went to KSFO Sunday archives for the 3 pm hour, and began listening. It is BB interviewing Barbara W. from last week.

FrankJ and all,

Yesterday, I tried to download Lynn's show from KSFO too, and as you said, it was Bob Brinker's show from last week.

However, I just checked and they have now archived Lynn's show from yesterday for those who want to listen to it or download it.

Here's the link: Bob Brinker's Moneytalk with Lynn Jimenez, 1pm, 2pm and 3-4pm

Birdbrain,

Great one, I will add it to my roster of Moneytalk Final Exam questions.

Hopefully, there will be more to follow as time goes on.

At some point when the Exam is Final, I will put them all in one post and create a permanent link to them so that newcomers can review them and be prepared if that fateful and sad day of Bob's retirement ever happens. :)

LOL! Hey it is my part-time gig. Brinker does a radio show, I do public service announcements on the highway.

By the way, has anyone actually looked at Jimenez book? I am curious what she recommends since she espouses the stock market is a pyramid scheme.

Moreover I have to wonder if this book is another way of implementing her agenda to convert the hard working Hispanic into a member of the Government dependency class.

Seems to me if you encourage savings but no equity position, you are setting people up to feel like they are always just treading water and not getting ahead. The perfect recipe for Obama class based politics. But I do not know what she recommends, but I am not impressed by her financial acumen.

Fluffy,

Hopefully, if someone has read her book, they will come forward.

Interesting thought...If no one has anything to say about it, I may buy the Kindle version and read it and may a book report on it.

It might be very enlightening to know why the woman felt compelled to write in Spanish coupled with English.

I never could think of a good reason for doing that. Can you?

Honeybee said...

Jeffchristie,

Do you know if the world stock markets are traded in English?

It appears that Lynn will be sitting in for Brinker for some time to come.

Her Keynote Speaker website page says she was "Recently tapped as permanent substitute host for Bob Brinker on the nationally syndicated radio program MoneyTalk, Lynn Jimenez has served previously as KGO Noon News co-anchor, and has often stepped in to handle breaking news."

You can find her Keynote Speaker page at: Keynotespeaker.com

Lynn Jimanez's book got 5 rave reviews on Amazon (all gave her 5 stars). I haven't read it, and probably won't, but at least 5 people loved it.

Apparently not many fans here, though. :-)

Honeybee said...

Rob in Pasadena,

Yes, that happened in the fall of 2009. As I recall, Bob Brinker even made the announcement on Moneytalk.

Apparently, Lynn has a contract with Brinker to do Moneytalk at least once per month.

Here are the weeks she has been on in 2012:

January 8, 2012: Lynn Jimenez
February 5, 2012, Super Bowl Sunday: Third hour rerun calls
February 12, 2012: Lynn Jimenez
March 11, 2012: Lynn Jimenez
April 8, 2012 Lynn Jimenez

Didn't Brinker say he had no control over who filled in for him when he was gone.

I don't think he really cares at this point in his career.

honeybee is right , can't stand to hear the voice of lynn or her views,, gasp,,, I went over my assets today being tax time,, and my tax accountant pointed out to me that brinkers choice of the fairholme fund had lost 75% of its value and then in 2010 or 11 .. brinker had us sell it ,, at a loss,, I am now aware of running the numbers month to month so this doesn't happen again,, honeybee is right, those numbers bob puts out of gain on his portfolios are for his newsletter to make him look good ,, thank you ms bee for making me aware again,,, buzzzzz

I don't know if Brinker was involved in the decision to name Lynn as permanent guest host. The reviews I have read over at Bogleheads have been overwhelmingly negative. I see her tarnishing the Brinker brand.

Lynn Jimenez on Moneytalk

Honeybee said...

I've tried my best to find the week that Bob Brinker welcomed Lynn Jimenez to his "team." I found where I mentioned it several times, but so far no luck in finding the transcription of what he said.

I think that a friend had some direct email communication with her and she stated that her Moneytalk appearances were pre-scheduled in advance.

In my opinion, the fact that she is still his replacement even though Brinker was dropped by (her regular station) KGO, shows that she has a contract with HIM.

I think the fact that Moneytalk is now carried on KSFO 560, a conservative radio station, is why Jimenez makes such a big deal of claiming not to take political sides. What a crock of bull!

She is very good at getting her views out through her "reporting" and then using caller-censorship for views doesn't want aired.

Anonymous said...

If Brinker actually picked Jimenez, I would say he picked very well. On the surface she appears to have credentials, until you actually examine them (i.e her Business Reporter BS sounds good). Academically she received a BA in Latin history, not exactly a degree normally associated with finance. If you examine her career, more or less, she has spent great deal of it of it as a political activist/community organizer doing out reach to give free services to Latinos and Homosexuals either through the private sector or public sector.

The reason I say Brinker picked well, is Jimenez makes Brinker look good by comparison by every measure. She is a bigger bitch than Bob is a prick in regard to callers, and she in apparently close to financially illiterate in terms of investments. However she may bring in a new untapped audience of extremely uneducated and unsophisticated potential subscribers to fill Da Brinks coffers. And I think you could legitimately argue that Jimenez audience could actually benefit by Da Brinks advice over her inanity.

Just random thoughts,

Are you sure about that? Or is that just an opinion?

In any case, the market laid another egg today. But there is one thing positive...the last time it was this oversold was back in late November. From there it went on a couple thousand poing rampage.

The best time to buy 'em is when they're being indiscriminately thrown out the window. I really believe that. Because I HAVE to!!!

Moneytalk is on over 200 radio stations nationwide. Which one are you saying is selecting the substitute host?

Dan G said...

Good point, Jeff. I think Brinker must make the call on who subs for him. You couldn't get 200 radio stations to agree on what day it was!

He had Terry Savage (http://www.terrysavage.com/) on a couple of times, but I think she was too popular (not to mention gorgeous!), so I guess he dumped her! Too much competition?

They are finally going to arrest and charge that trigger happy Zimmerman. I hope it is first degree murder and they hang him.

Honeybee said...

Roy Beane,

And if it's not murder, but self-defense instead, then what do you hope happens?

Roy Beane said...

"And if it's not murder, but self-defense instead, then what do you hope happens?"

Well in that case he still would probably face a wrongful death lawsuit and lose, just like OJ Simpson.

Then he and the homeowners association would have to pay. Goodby gated community.

Roy Beane,

You've made your announcement. The subject is off-topic at this blog and now closed unless someone else wants to comment on what you said.

They should pin a medal on Zimmerman for aiding society in the elimination of a criminal element. I am donating to Zimmerman's defense fund and invite others to support this fine man.

You may donate to this fine American's defense at:

I don't know if Zimmerman is guilty or innocent. But I'm pretty sure his life will never be the same whether he's convicted or not. He's already been convicted in the black community, along with most other "whiteys".

I'm not saying that the press is biased, but why do they continually print that 5 year-old photo of the "kid", complete with halo? The "kid" was huge, I think 6 ft. 3.

For sure, Zimmerman was guilty of stupidity for following that guy, gun or no gun. You look for trouble, you usually find it!

jeffchristie said...

If Zimmerman is found not guilty by reason of self defense he would be immune from a wrongful death civil suit under Florida law.

Clarence D said...

But they can go after Zimmerman's HOA who has more money anyway!

"That’s because if Zimmerman’s claim that he shot the unarmed 17-year-old in self-defense is upheld by prosecutors, a judge or a jury, Florida’s so-called stand your ground law would protect him from a lawsuit. But his clearance or acquittal wouldn’t stop Martin’s parents from suing The Retreat at Twin Lakes homeowners association — and its insurance policies and assets would make it a much more lucrative target than Zimmerman, even if he is eventually convicted of a crime.

Plus, lawyers say, Exhibit A would be a newsletter sent by the association to residents in February, the same month as the shooting. It said Zimmerman was the go-to person for residents who had been the victims of a crime."
